Sex Education in America and Sexual Assault
Creators: Garien Agapito & Carson Goffinet
Sexual assault is increasingly prevalent towards young children and teens. The motivation of our presentation is to improve sex education because of high child abuse rates and general lack of knowledge about safe-sex practices. The problem is the occurrence of sexual assault as a result of teenagers receiving poor sex education in schools. We propose that more effective sex education curricula be put in place in order to teach young people about the dangers of sex and benefits of consensual practices. Using data and statistics we’ll show the current approach to sexual education. We’ll also report statistics from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) on sexual assault and discuss the relationship between the two. Images will also be used to attract people’ attention emotionally in order to effectively get our point across. After attending the poster session, educators will be convinced to teach, act, and petition for better sex education and child sexual abuse awareness. Once educators focus more on teaching consent, rates of sexual assault in high schools and colleges will go down.
