Course: Biology Capstone (Begley)
Abstract: This workshop was created by Biology Capstone students in our partnership with ACCESS to teach elementary-age kids about different types of microbes and how the human body is able to fight off germs. Because service was completely virtual, the hands-on activities were designed to keep everyone engaged over Zoom. Through a build-a-germ activity, the kids were able to design their own microbes. Then, they shared with the group how they’re good or bad for our health and later talked about how they think the body fights them off. Our group was challenged in making these activities to think critically about science communication and adapting information to be easily understood by young kids.
