This pamphlet was designed to summarize the lessons taught in our two workshops with a classroom of first graders. In our first workshop, we taught the kids about the importance of “Eating the Rainbow”, in which they learned about how it is important to fill their plates with all the colors. This pamphlet contains a recipe for a Fall Harvest Salad that contains many different colors through the addition of kale, apples, cheese, cranberries, and other colorful foods. During the second workshop, we taught the kids about macromolecules: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. In addition to learning about examples of each, they played macromolecule bingo. The recipe on the pamphlet that encompasses this workshop’s lesson is a balanced breakfast recipe. It contains healthy ingredients from all classes of macromolecules. This pamphlet was sent home with the kids in hopes that they will talk to their parents about the nutrition facts they learn, and hopefully help them make the recipes!
