Our research report focuses on biking and bike-sharing systems in the Boston area. Specifically, we wanted to look at the BlueBike system and how people use it, how safe it is, and how it could be improved. Our club (STAN) is broken into 3 subgroups, one of which is a biking focused group. We have found throughout the semester that a lot of members of STAN are very passionate about biking, and additionally biking is very prevalent around the Northeastern campus. For this reason, we thought that a research report on biking would be helpful to the club.
During our weekly meetings, we often have speakers who collect data and analyze metrics relating to public transportation and infrastructure in the Boston area. We conducted similar research on a smaller scale to foster like-minded actionable conclusions. We wanted to present information that STAN would find interesting and relevant to their organization. Our service learning teaching assistant, Amanda, ran various helpful experiential learning activities such as team-bonding exercises, informative presentations, and writing-oriented assignments. One in particular asked us to assume the roles of various people in a school to think about how restorative justice might be used to reduce bullying. By participating in these exercises, we were able to gain some crucial skills that help us in our student groups, such as effective communication, researching skills, and stronger abilities to write on more abstract ideas. Specifically, we learned how to pass information without direct communication, which has led to members of our group filling in gaps of knowledge without speaking to other members of the team.
