Course: Philosophy for Children
As the first service-learning course offered by the Philosophy department, our class took on the task of facilitating productive philosophical conversation with second and fourth graders at the Hernández After School Program. Through various children’s books, we were able to discuss concepts such as courage, environmental ethics, aesthetics, and metaphysics. I was able to create a Book Module and Discussion Framework as a reading guide for a future teacher to introduce Philosophy for Children into their classroom. Based on the book, “The French Fry King” by Rogé, this reading guide provides a framework for a discussion with children on the meaning of life and self-identity.
