826 Boston and Rafael Hernandez School are members of the Egleston Square Community in Jamaica Plain where students are provided a space to engage with volunteers and staff members in the greater Boston area to enable them to have their voices heard, and to thrive in their bilingual identity. Its history and purpose is deeply rooted in the diverse Egleston Square Community where the neighborhood transitioned itself throughout history. This presentation addresses the changing face of Egleston Square in modern time and assesses the role of 826 Boston and Rafael Hernandez School in the community of youth population. By doing so, the presentation emphasizes the importance of the role of community engagement in urban education.
