This presentation is a culmination of semester-long work, presenting the student-developed systems map that focuses on gentrification in the City of Boston. Utilizing the systems-mapping software, Kumu, we were able to critically analyze the forces at play that impact residents differently. This process allowed us to capture a significant issue facing many Bostonians, especially those from vulnerable populations. The information and research conducted through this project were presented to our classmates, and thus benefitted our understanding of the roles the nonprofit sector plays in American society, the benefits, the costs, and everything in between. Furthermore, this systems-thinking allowed us to sharpen our lens and act in Northeastern Students 4 Giving in a justice-oriented way utilizing the least extractive methodology, ultimately culminating in our grant-making decisions.
