Course: ENGW1114 First-Year Writing with Service-Learning
In First Year Writing with Service Learning, our class was introduced to various types of writing styles, one of them being an Op-Ed. We were encouraged to choose a topic which is of interest to us and the children we tutor outside of class. I chose to write my opinionated piece on what I believe to be a ridiculous and potentially damaging phenomenon; that of young people’s growing obsession with horoscopes and star signs. In this Op-Ed article titled No One Cares That You’re a Virgo: The Idiocy of Zodiac Signs, I outline what I believe to be the weaknesses of horoscope practices, and explain the ways in which such practices have yet to undergo substantive scholarly research, but can still be damaging to young people’s long-term socialization.
