The motivation for the formation of this group is to collaborate with the Massachusetts Avenue Coalition to produce meaningful data visualizations to communicate data related to Boston’s opioid epidemic and its impact on the surrounding community. Some motivating questions for investigating the epidemic include: has the initiative to make clean needles available assisted in the prevention of other diseases such as HIV? Do social determinants of health (socioeconomic status, race, occupation, access to hospitals) have an impact on the extent of the epidemic? Our primary dataset focuses on service requests within Boston, requests collected starting in 2011 and continuing to 2022. The dataset conveys information about the various neighborhoods, police districts, addresses, and zip codes in which needles around Boston were located.
